Advancing Modern Hip & Knee Care Through Clinical Research

Dr. Harris is actively involved in ongoing research that helps improve modern hip, knee, and perioperative care. Staying engaged with the evidence, and contributing to the growing body of knowledge surrounding hip and knee replacement, is part of how he keeps his practice current. He has authored more than 100 publications and presentations in orthopaedic surgery, and serves as a peer reviewer for multiple orthopaedic journals. His work asks practical questions with a single aim: making surgery safer, more comfortable, and longer-lasting. An up-to-date list of his publications can be found on Google Scholar.

Preventing Infection

Infection is one of the most serious complications of joint replacement. Dr. Harris’s research looks at who is most at risk and at the preoperative steps, from antibiotic strategies to correcting risk factors that can help lower that risk.

Preventing Fractures

Bone weakened by osteoporosis can fracture around an implant, sometimes years later. Dr. Harris studies how bone health shapes implant durability, and how recognizing and treating it may help reduce fractures around a hip or knee replacement.

Reducing Blood Transfusions

Blood loss during surgery can mean a transfusion and a slower recovery. Dr. Harris’s research helps identify patients at risk of anemia and examines techniques used to limit blood loss and the need for transfusion.

Preoperative Risk Assessment

Not every patient carries the same risk, and much of that can be measured beforehand. Dr. Harris is very interested in research that seeks to understand what factors place patients at higher risk of complications after joint replacement surgery and how these risk factors can be optimized for the best outcome.
